I just read (in two days!) "Clapton's Guitar: Watching Wayne Henderson Build the Perfect Instrument." I'm sure that for experienced builders there's not much new to be learned about guitar building itself, but the book is much more that just information about Mr. Henderson's style of building. Mr. St. John does a wonderful job capturing the whole aura that surrounds the acoustic guitar, i.e. Guitar Acquisition Syndrome, which, a least for members of this forum, can be translated into GBS, Guitar Building Syndrome! The book can had for around $15.00 if you look at more than just the usual online booksellers. I ordered three copies, one for myself and two for a couple of German friends/professional luthiers.
It's interesting that no matter how famous Henderson's client is Henderson completes the guitars in his own time which can mean ten years to deliver.
I originaly thought (and posted) "So what does he do for a living then?", but it turns out he's making 20 guitars a year, so he must be quite good. These posts (and some on the MIMF) made it sound like someone making guitars on occasion who is just exceptional at creating a name for himself. Glad I was wrong! |

He used to be a mail carrier. He just quit that job to build full time. And it sounds like he is a pretty proficient picker too. |

Yes, a very good read indeed! And it had its funny parts too which I enjoyed. Very interesting about Waynes building techniques too! |

He just quit that job to build full time. Didn't quit, he retired with a full pension. He carried mail for a long, long time. |

but he still quit... I am sure they didn't throw him out when he got enough time in to retire. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

but he still quit... Retiring is not quitting. Reaching retirement age and being pensioned-off isn't the same as up and quitting. |
